A Baha hearing aid or a bone anchored hearing product is a hearing aid that needs to be implanted into the ear through a surgical procedure. This procedure will help eliminate hearing problems and it works by utilizing a process called direct bone conduction in which the sound actually is conducted through a person’s bone instead of through the middle ear. Three Main Components
There are essentially three primary components to the Baha hearing aid. These components include the actual implant, an external appliance and finally, a sound processor. All these three components are designed to work together to enhance natural transmission of sound waves through bone mass and transmitting sound to the inner ear. In this fashion, sound waves are not required to pass through the middle ear or external auditory canal.
The implanted component of the Baha hearing aid is constructed from a small piece of titanium. The sound processor component transmits sound vibrations through an external appliance which creates vibrations that pass through the bone structure. This in turn cause stimulation of the nerve fibers present in a person’s inner ear and reproduces the hearing sensations experienced via the natural process.
It must be noted that not all people are suited to utilization of the Baha hearing aids. This procedure is only suitable for repair of hearing loss that is caused by chronic ear infections or because of congenital defects in the middle ear. In addition, the Baha hearing aid can be beneficial to those who are deaf in one ear. Unfortunately there are not many alternative and satisfactory solutions to taking care of unilateral deafness other than the Baha hearing aid.
